Nickel Plate Road-General American Car wood reefer GARX 60221 that Bob Albert discovered in 1998 in a Michigan field is being commemorated by the Nickel Plate Road Historical & Technical Society's Model of the Year. This year's model is an easily assembled Accurail HO scale plastic kit decorated in FOUR colors. It comes with trucks and operating knuckle couplers. The prototype is one of 400 cars in the series 60000-60399 which entered service in 1922, were leased to GATX in 1934, and were retired by 1946. Some cars served in company ice service, notably between Bellevue, O., and Frankfort, Ind., until 1964. As a model of an historically important freight car that unfortunately no longer exists, it will serve as an attractive mantelpiece model as well as a realistic addition to your model roster. For more information on this colorful series of cars, see the WINTER 1978 and SPRING 2000 issues of the Nickel Plate Road Magazine.
